Another 900 GTS story. The Black Pig

Yes thats basically what i do but i use a lathe and i have a ball race on an arm mounted in the tool post then turn the chuck by hand.
Here is a couple of mine
Smiths

Nippon denso

Unfortunately by the time i had stripped the paint on the Smiths cases, sprayed the outside black and inside white as well as the blue section around the bulb area, bought the glass, bezel, seals and fixed it all together its not really comercially viable but fine for DIY.

Snip...

Yes, I understand. But they do look crackin'. Does the same method work for Nippondenso's?

Yea the rolling of the seal ring on the ND's above is the same as rolling the bezels. advantage of doing in a lathe is you dont need seperate tools for smiths and ND's.. I made up a hard wood face plate to go in the chuck so it does not damage the bezel when you squeeze the whole thing together before rolling the edge over. I have not tried Veglia yet

funnily enough the seal rings turned up tonight... had a quick play, but need to allow a bit of time for this as the stainless seems quite thick gauge to be able to turn it over with a screwdriver as the seller suggests :(

Hi
we have a new member Colin "Quantox" with a GTS
I pm him to join the GTS section he said he will when he finds it
i pm again with directions
Hopfully he will find us
Asked about his GTS tank and stripe
black / gold and the tank stripe is 15mm inner, 3mm gap and 3mm stripe each side.

Bezel !!! tryed the screwdriver what a mess crimp marks all over the place
i refuse to take a photo so you can laught

Looks like Paddy's in the frame for fitting new bezels! I just need to find some for Veglia. Bob, what do you reckon?

I think I've seen on another forum posts from Colin in Keswick. I hope he does come here as I'm sure he's another font of knowledge to tap into.

The Veglia and Smiths instruments were virtually interchangeable and I'm sure they had the same dimensions. MY GTS had Veglia clocks and my 900SS had Smiths (or was it the other way round?).
The glass from an old style tax disc holder is the exact size to fit a Smiths clock, although a fraction thicker, and probably fits a Veglia too.

OK i found a Veglia case in stock and an old Smiths Bezel i removed from the ones in the pictures above and they fit together fine.

Between you and me i have a guy in Aus looking into making new Ducati faces for Smiths clocks, if that comes off i will be able to convert the plentyful Triumph and BSA clocks too Ducati. Dont tell anyone ;)

just ordered a set will be with me mid week
I will check them against Veglia clocks i have 2 rev counters and 3 speedos
between posts lol
i had one done a few years ago and thought they were the same new faces would be good
Diff years /models had diff faces also blue or black colours never did work out what went with what

Great idea - although they won't all suit; Most smiths are not 1600's.

Does anyone have a break down of the Smiths codes for example i have a
SSM 5007/08 1600
and a
SSM 5007/004 1000

They look identicle ?

Speedo Numbers: At the bottom of the speedo is a small number(1500 or 1000). I use these numbers to match the right wheel drive unit to the correct speedo. The 1500 goes with the drive unit marked 15/12 and the 1000 goes with the drive unit marked 2/1. The numbers represent the revolutions of the two gears inside the drive. Most of the speedos that run with the 2/1 are 120mph and the 15/12 are 150 mph. Sharon 6/19/02
Found this on http://www.thevincent.com/vininst.htm
Speedo Numbers: I have (3) 150 mph speedos, and they all have 1600 (not 1500) on them, I also have (3) 120 mph speedos, and they all have 1000 on them. According to information I got from Jim Robb many years ago, that number represents the rpm required at the input to make the speedometer read 60 mph. The numbers on my speedometers is consistent with the information that Sharon offered except for the fact that they say 1600 on the 150 mph speedos. These things can be calibrated by moving the magnetic coupling in or out, and checked by using a power drill to spin the unit. My old power drill was tach'ed at about 1100 rpm, which was calculated to give somewhere around 55 mph reading with a 120 mph speedometer. Carl Best 6/19/02

Many thanke Bob that useful info.
I was told a while back tht you can actually make a revcounter read speed they are that adjustable,
This is a couple of clocks i have

the triumph clock cost me £30 from ebay and has the same trip and milage cut out positions and the same dial fixing points. ( a lot do not) as the Ducati clock on the right. I cant see why with the correct face and an adjustment/calibration i could not convert a £30 clock into a very hard to find Ducati clock ;-)

Anyway, i'm feeling guilty about hijacking Dereks thread here.

This is all terrific information and expansion of the "gene pool" will only benefit other Bevel owners in future. I'm really enjoying being a part of this forum and looking forward to getting home (currently on holiday in Turkey, then a trip to Switzerland next week) as I have a lot of blasted / polished / plated bits to pick up. It's been a bit dispiriting taking the GTS apart, but building something (hopefully) decent should be a lot more rewarding albeit expensive. Thanks to all and keep posting!
Derek

Hi Colin, welcome
So you have had it for 4 years, does it run ? do you use it or is it a project you have decieded to start ? what are your plans? Can we see a picture ?
I'm sure you will slot right in here, its a good place to fire up enthusiasm :)

I have to say i have only recently returned to this site having not bothered because of similar issues. Even now i have a hell of a job bringing this site up sometimes. I get "oooops Google could not connect". I usually have to go to a Google search and come in that way as book marks don't seem to work. As for disappearing text. If you take too long to type a message then click post it disappears into cyber space. I have to type the message into Word then copy and paste it into the text box here and post then i have only a little time with the text box open and a back up copy of the post..

PS, just tried to post this and it came up, Page not available........and disappeared......lol
It will not beat me...i have a back up ;)

It was misbehaving last evening and it is, I agree, hugely annoying when your message disappears however, I'd be lost without the friendly encouragement that I get here. I treat the crashes as editing lessons, thinking that if I can, frustratedly, say what I meant in a couple of sentences, then I shouldn't waffle on so self-indulgently anyway. So I'll stop. Soon.

Yea but with all due respect quantox is a new poster here and we wanted to know about his bike and see some pictures. I don't think is waffling on self indulgently to post about a 900GTS on a 900GTS thread :) I would say that's exactly what people want and the whole purpose of the forum;)
anyway quantox....look on the thread as a bit of a Ducati in its self .....with a mind of its own..dont let it beat you we want to hear your story :)

Hi Colin,
Yes, please don't let this glitch deter you. For long missives I always put it on Word first. That way I can have the spell checker put it into understandable English language before posting.
I'd love to hear all about your GTS. That's what this thread is for!
Best regards,
Derek

Now a bleeding moderator has to approve my next post? Why bother?

Any post that includes a link from a new user (one with less than 10 posts) is automatically placed into the moderation queue as a guard against spammers*

* = We get around 4 spammers applying to join for every 1 genuine user - it's a growth industry.

I don't know what the cause of your problem was last night - there is nothing in the server logs or the remote monitoring service to indicate the site was down or was having problems late yesterday evening / this morning, what can happen is that you are logged out after a time period if you didn't check the "remember me" button when you logged in.

As a few other posters have already mentioned, I would recommend drafting anything that takes you more than 10 minutes to type in another program - preferably one that autosaves - otherwise site problems, network problems, powercuts, slippery mice, etc can all lead to lost work.

I think we need to get this thread back on the 860 track :-)

Interesting to see Ducati's non electric start 860 on the workshop manual :)

I would like the engine out of that Very Tidy with no starter

And never mind the sarcasm its mostly ment in good humour  :o
fish and waterproof head and that :lol2:

I saw a side cover like that on ebay a bit ago that was listed as for a Darmah but was actually a kick-only 860 by the looks. I was thinking about buying it and dumping the big old starter but MMT persuaded me that my leg would like me for keeping it.
