DIY..... its cheaper

The frames vary quite a bit Derek, This S2 and the SS frames are quite a bit lighter. The SS also comes in a Verlicchi version which is chrome molly and even lighter. steering head angle also change a bit which is why the Darmah is so long and stable. another major defiance is in width especially in the seat area where the 750 is quite a bit wider, as is the 860 and Darmah.

I don't know about the Darmah frame, however I do have an original SS frame *and* an original Verlicchi SS frame, both of which I have weighed. I didn't weigh the GTS frame but subjectively it felt like a standard (non Verlicchi) SS frame. The GTS frame has the under tank bracing that you get with Darmah & NCR frames but don't get with an SS frame. The Verlicchi frame is stupidly lighter, about 4Kg's IIRC. Swinging arms for Verlicchi & SS weighed about the same.

Hi Scott
That 860 deserves it's own thread with all the details. Can you set one up with more information??
Did you have the Radaelli rims re-chromed? I sort of regret I didn't do that.
Looks like a candidate for Paddy's hall of fame as well.
I look forward to seeing the finished bike.
Derek

Can i stick it on my customers bikes page Scott ? I thought that was the frame i sold you !! but then i thought....no one builds that quick :)

Hi Derek/Paddy

Yep Radaelli rims were re-chromed Derek at great expense along with other items, its the old story you get what you pay for the old girl deserves it being nearly family, my pal's father's bike.

No worries with uploading the pic's onto your site Paddy this resto is going to be start stop as there are other things on the go, but as for the spare frame Paddy, that's still at the planning stage.

Scott

I don't quite see why it went from twin disc to single disc during the build ?? Is this why you were after a twin nipple RH caliper ?

nice 3-some :) I did have a Laverda/Guzzi/Ducati in the shed at the same time, but couldnt get on with the parallel twin :)

What a lovely V7! They really have a certain style. I remember going to Bradford on my FSIE to look at them in Brook Lister.
I nearly bought a Laverda SF but went for the 900GTS. Aren't they that great?
Once rode a Jota but didn't really like it. Felt like all the weight was about 4 metres from the ground! Must be a real contrast to the V7! That Pete Davies must have had nerves of steel to ride the Jota the way he did - on Avon Roadrunner tyres...

the SF's are apparently very good... I think mine was just duff as the bloke i sold it too managed to blow the engine apparently! it didnt seem to have much go in it, I think there was an ignition problem as it seemed really flat... .. lovely to look at and i think i would've hung on to it if i had had the time to get it sorted..

I think thats just Laverda's, i bought a Jota expecting it to live up to the reputation but it was just a big old heavy under powered "thing"...IMHO compared with my SS at the time it was like a F1 car against a transit van. I dont think people realize that although its a big old 1000cc 4 stroke you have to rev the b"llocks of them to get them to move.....its bloody hard work :) Its main mission in life is to tank slap you through a hedge.

That's a bit harsh Paddy. Jotas look and sound great - and let's face it, they stuffed everything in production racing at the time. It was just that the handling was "of the period" wheras the SS and Guzzis at least had frames with plenty of tubes without bends in them. The guys who raced them on those lousy tyres were heroes.

Hang on then, i will try and think of something nice to say about Jota's...............................nope........... nothing comes to mind :)

The look, the sound (of the 180's) - and in that particular colour it is irrestistable to me. Oh! and they don't go bang! in the night if you give 'em hell unlike a certain vintage of Ducati unless you give them oil changes at every lamp post.

Back to square one....I had intended to build and use an engine with elec start but having finished it i dont like the idea of no kick start back up. So now i am going to build another with a kick start shaft and junk the elec start. i also have a SS crank being rebuilt so that will be useful :) picked these up yesterday, fine pair of bosch cases, stripped and cleaned today and waiting to go and get blasted. Frame is at the sprayers, picked the tank up from the guy that seals tanks this morning. At this rate i will be ready for the pizza bash next year.....

thats not frost on it either, its a minor attack of corrosion. Spanish corrosion.

Nice! Who is doing the crank out of interest?

And why wait for the Horsham Piazza pizza run when you can have band, beer & Indian (nearby) at the V Twin bash? There are tons of V Twins there - Morini's, Dukes, excellent ancient Brit V Twins, Guzzi's - and even the occasional Harley & Indian.

I wasnt waiting for the pizza run !!......i was rushing it through for the pizza run and that looks doubtful :)
Crank is with Nigel down at Portland.

Blimey Paddy - you're the northern hemisphere Ian Gowanloch!

Quick tech question for all you bevel people.
I have seen in the past people strugle to lign up Conti's on 860's. Usually the rear hanger mount does not lign up. I have checked Darmah and 860 header and balance pipe part numbers and they are the same for lafranconi and Silentium silencers. the silencer part numbers match those of the SS as well so in theory all should be interchangeable ??...I know the headers have diferent part numbers but thats only because SS have single wall and Darmah /860 double wall i think. All the balance pipes have the same parts number. This is a customers picture sent to me today.
Any thoughts ?? its not something i have ever tried ( Conti's on to 860)
