Métis 2 Bobber Build

Got the two upper fuel tank mounts tacked into place today. Cut the top frame tube to let the brackets sit flush. Thought I'd just do it with the bike on the drive instead of swopping bikes around to put it on the ramp. Now winter is upon us, it soon went dark & I ended up tacking the last one in the dark & my back was aching too !
I need to strip the frame down now to do the lower two mounts as they will fix to the bottom of the lower frame tube so it will be easier to do this with the frame upside down.
They are just held in approximate positions at the moment with locking wire.

Got a few bits machined up for the steering stops today & tacked into position.
Once final welding is done I'll drill the holes through the frame tubes & thread them. The black delrin bits will then screw into these bushes & act as a bit of a cushion when at full-lock.

Only had a few hours as my wife had told me we were going to a bit of a do for one of our neighbours, who'd died recently, at 3pm.
Got tidied up, tools cleaned & put away, bathed & then she tells me it's next week !

Got the pilot hole opened out today on the number plate mounting bracket. Ended up doing it on my lathe after bolting it to the faceplate.

Then I noticed iron filings all over my van, wife's car & son's car so ended up having to wash them then. I thought I'd kept well clear of them when I was using my disc cutter to cut some brackets to shape. The dust must have blown everywhere !! One to remember next time.
Knackered now so sat down with a glass of red ! (y)

When it rains, that shows up the iron dust.

It also embeds itself into the paint. Leaving a nice Emery cloth feeling, when you touch it.

Used to have this at Fords, when all the machining dust used to fall out of the atmosphere, onto the cars in the carpark.

The cars were covered with moisture from last night, so as though it had rained & like you say, shows up the iron dust as rusty specks.
My son is a bit anal when it comes to cleaning his cars & he has, amongst his many cleaning products, a product called IronX, which you spray over the car & it turns the dust purple. It smells a bit acidie, but seems to work very well indeed. You then wash it off with hot, soapy water & rinse if off. My van is a very light lime green, almost primrose yellow, the wife's is white & both clearly showed it up. My son's dark blue car was a little harder to see, but covered in it non the less.
They're all clean & shiney now (y)

That wasn't a 5 minute job. That looks lovely (y)

Wow, overengineered but beautiful none the less
They are indeed & the picture's really don't do them juctice. Obviously they'd look a bit s**t on a V4 tank, but maybe a Monster could get away with wearing one !
I've got two because my fuel tank will actually be two tanks, one either side of the top two frame tubes unlike the first bike, which had it's fuel tank between the top two tubes.

Shhh stu, this is cats thread, not everything is about you

So what's next on the must do list cat ?

Hopefully, get the brackets I tacked on final welded this week. Then align the rear wheel & make the two spacers required.

Got all the brackets that I'd tacked on final welded the other day so spend yesterday & today in the garage on my lathe.

Got the rear wheel centralised & the two spacers made & fitted. I just need to make, or get made, the two chain adjusters drawn up & machined out of stainless steel.

DSCN4293.JPG

Made a brass, top steering cover instead of using the "off-the-peg" cheapo pressed steel affair normally fitted.
DSCN4292.JPG

Made the right-hand footrest mount & a couple of countersunk washers for the two mounting screws.
DSCN4283.JPG

Then, made two weld-in mounts for the two filler caps, just need to drill & tap the mounting holes now. Sadly the caps came with steel weld-in bungs !
DSCN4279.JPG

After the crack that appeared in the other bike's tank around one of the mounts, I re-made the lower mounts & made them a bigger diameter. Hopefully that & double skinning the area of the mounts should prevent any leaks in this next bike's tanks.

Finally, I thought I'd already made the fuel tap adaptor for the tank, but after hunting high & low I gave up & made another one.

Tomorrow is garage & lathe cleaning day !! It's forecast to be raining again so wouldn't be doing much else anyway !!:ROFLMAO:

Finished the filler cap weld-in bungs today. Managed to get all sixteen holes in the correct positions & both caps fitted fine.

And, the gearbox turned up this morning too so I got that slaved in & had a look at what sort of off-set I might need to get it lined up correctly.

After a quick measure up with a straight edge it looks like I'll need a zero off-set gearbox sprocket to get the final drive chain to line up although the gearbox mounting plate I've currently got fitted has 25mm off-set inbuilt. I need to get it up on the ramp now & have a proper look at the sprocket/chain alignment.

Hopefully I'm booked in for February to get the tanks made. I want to get them made first & now I've got all the weld-in adaptors done for the tank caps, fuel tap & balance pipe I can go ahead with the tanks.
I have the oil tank/battery box from the first bike, which needs altering a bit for this one, but I need to get the gearbox/starter-motor/primary drive fitted in position first as there is a clearance issue.
I'll then get the rear mudguard made by the guy who did the first one.
In the meantime I've got the paddock stand adaptors to mill down a bit & then I can sort the actual paddock stand out, which needs modifying. I've dismantled the stand & seperated all the sections ready for re-assembly/welding once the adaptors are sorted & fitted. I'll get the stand welded while it's set up on the bike, that way I know it will fit !!
I've made the guides that fit into the top of the stand & that will engage with the adaptors mounted on the frame.

This is the setup on the first bike & the second will be exactly the same.

Yes, too dark. It's going to be the two blues like that Indian 4. Already got the RAL codes for them.
