Old Bike

it's very nice Scott, what are you doing to it, just tinkering like I do or does it need some restoration work? :)

I would have thought Bevel heaven would have the petrol taps , Might be nice to grab a gear gazer for the rear bevel drive also  Oh and a gear lever return spring as they tend to go plus the dogs wear on second gear on the early models and ...............

:D :p

Just tinkering really, the history that came with the bike suggested that it hadn't been started since 1987 so there's a bit of fettling to be done before it can be fully returned to road use.

It's also sat with fuel in the carbs for a while, so they need a bit looking at.

Brakes are seized.

Suspension needs attention.

Paintwork @@@@ed.

Tyres as old as the hills.

Wheels need refurbished.

And just a good all round service / clean.

It's not too bad really!

Bevel heaven is now my 2nd most frequented website! ;)

The shape of the darmah tank hides the rear bevel cover - no point getting one mate, unless I want to chop a bit out of the tank

These petrol taps seem to be a bit unusual - I've yet to find similar for sale anywhere, though I understand Brancato's have the last set in the UK.

I've heard about the gearboxes - the bike has only done 13,000 miles though, think it's a bit soon for the wear to be an issue.

...when I'm honest Scott, I never expected you to ever go for something like this. Something that isn't just a turn the key and press the t1t. I know from my own experience of 'tinkering' and restoring older Ducs that you'll get great satisfaction from it. Good on yer mate!

Whats the matter with the Campag wheels, they don't look too bad?

...have you tried Giovanni moto for the fuel taps. I know I had to fit replacement nasty Paoli taps on the Pantah as the originals were extinct.

Pfffft a minor consideration , Had one on mine , even if you had to crouch down to see it :D

As for the gear problem , Mick Walkers supplied a replacement gear back in the day which was cheaper than getting the complete gearbox from a later model , IIRC I was charged £65 when I replaced mine , not to sure if there still available ?

Oh and I think I remember seeing a Darmah with a modified tank somewhere but it was for a Boyer Bransden ignition unit , did look a bit odd tbh .

I've been looking for a while mate - it's that bugger across the cromarty's fault! :lol2:

The wheels could do with getting stripped and painted at least. Thinking also about getting the x-rayed to be on the safe side.

Looked at the Giovanni link already, but keep hoping to re-use these paoli's as I liked the wee bowl that's on them - but getting a bitty pished off with them now.

There's a red/green darmah in the bevheav gallery with the gear gazer fitted and a modification to the tank to make it visible.

Just don't know if I can be arsed chopping the tank up for this - I don't see the value in adding the gazer without being able to see it.

Not thought a lot about the gearbox tbh, I think with the mileage it shouldn't be a consideration.

Jobs for today:-

Get the garages organised so I can get the darmah in the middle of the floor.
Calipers off.
Brake hoses off.
Watch the GP.
Shout at the telly! ;)

...yes that Bugger across the firth (Chromarty) is responsible for my having to go hungry for a while also!!! :p

My jobs for the day are to whip the clutch apart, good clean, change the fluid as it's as black as Sabbath, the same with the front fluid, watch the GP also and then sit and stare at my wonderful new toy!!! :)

Glad to see you finally found one Scott, you were talking about this when I was mulling over the SC earlier this year.
Bring it along to next years Ayr classic show and sit it next to Nigels:D
Perhaps one day in a couple of years I'll manage to get one too,I'll be sure to consult the resident bevell experts when I do.

Davie harbour motorbikes at Ayr(moto guzzi dealer) was selling a 900 sd with 9000 on the clock on behalf of a customer at the start of the year,i tried to buy but could not afford. sure they would tell you where it went

Well, I guess it had to happen!

I hit my first real problem tonight.

While removing the left hand engine case, I traced the wires for the forward cylinder ignition pickup to the bosch module so that I could remove the engine case.

Right up where the wire passes into the bosch module connector, the insulation on the wires has hardened and when I disturbed it, the insulation broke up and fell off exposing the bare copper.

Oh arse!

I don't imagine the wiring for the rear cylinder pickup will be any better, though the rest of the wiring on the bike looks fine, these sections will need replacing :(

Hope that's the last of the problems!!

:(

Minor setback only!

You might find that some other areas of the wiring is suspect as well.

If in any doubt it might be better to replace it as you go rather than wait for problems once she is on the road. Fiddly perhaps but not too expensive and Ducati Forfar isn't too far from you if like me you don't know your ohms from your amps.

Hope you bought Nov Classic Bike?

Pretty much all the goodies featured would suit you and the bike.;) :)

I thought the Guzzi dealer in Ayr has shut down?, every time I've been past in the last few months its been shut.
I'll have a look in Harbour bikes next time in Ayr. (Honda dealer on the riverside, unless they've also taken a new franchise)

The Guzzi dealer was Tams Brig Motorcycles and nobody seems to know why they closed but the owner is now trading as Moto Ecosse Ltd, Flemington Ind Estate, Rutherglen and he still has a Guzzi dealership....Strange...

Was at Moto Ecosse a few months back and the premises is in a little @@@@ty unkept industrial estate and from what we saw of the setup we would not recommend....My 2p worth anyway

Finally.

It's taken a little longer than I hoped, but it appears that the Darmah is now ready for the road :D

Huge thanks to the team at Ducati Glasgow who were every bit as excited as I was at the end of this long journey - George and Charlie, thanks for your perseverence! Tracey, thanks for your patience when I couldn't make my mind up and your guidance when I needed it! And of course, Harry for being a bawbag :lol2:

Stuart at Jacksons of Kelty for turning the paintwork around and producing a crackerjack job!

And all the other various vendors and specialists that have helped get to this point.

Most of all though, Stewart (239desmo), thanks mate. It's cost me a @@@@in fortune!!!

Well done Scott, that bike looks absolutely fantastic.
I'm sure it has been worth every minute of the long wait to get it back on the road. I'll look forward to seeing and hearing it later in the year.

Very nice indeed Scott:cool: I know of 2 darmahs that are lying in sheds not 10 miles from me and i have been chasing the fairing model for the past year and was on the phone only this morning about it and the old bugger is still keeping me hanging:mad: It will be a total strip down job as it has been laid up for years but as he says "Dont worry your first on the list for it" again Arrrrrggggg.

The other is still there but has bits missing but i want the one with the fairing as it is complete:D One day i;ll have it :flash::flash:
