My Energy supplier has gone bust.

Everyone should pay the same % in tax above a tax free threshold. Why should someone who earns more pay a higher percentage? Who has the right to determine at what rates progressive levels kick in? That’s just a step towards communism where someone in charge says ‘right you can all have £xxxxx to live off and the State gets the rest coz I’ve decreed that £xxxxx is all you need.

If there was a flat rate % on ALL income regardless of whether it’s earned paye income, investment income or capital gains or inheritance, it would massively simplify the tax system, save billions in civil service costs within HMRC and be fairer to everyone.

The Govt should also do away with the stupid system whereby the poor get paid benefits gross and then have to pay tax on it it’s crazy, plus civil service DHSS job creating to administer it.

Why don’t we have a much better equal to all system? Because there’s more than enough miserable Marxist/communist/left wing/labour voters around that want to make everyone as equally miserable as they are because that’s ‘fairer’ in their eyes.

I haven't said anything about higher earners paying a higher percentage.

Are you a closet Tory, or Ex Tory by chance ? They always assume anything UNtory is Marxist/communist/left wing/labour.

I'm saying everyone pays the same rate of tax, but everyone pays it, no loop holes.

As an example, a contractor doing the same job as me is paying a year what I pay a month - how is that fair ?

The basis of the current 2 tier system (forget higher rate) was the torys idea of taxing the rich, effectively you were considered rich in the mid 80's if you earned over arounf £33k, however, in 2021 can you say you are as rich on £45k. Flat rate doesn't suffer tax creep 😳

I don’t mind paying my tax.
I don't pay any personal tax, just got my first rebate ever of £400. I have just suffered £6500 corporate income tax though from last year
I have only just started paying myself a wage out of the business of just under £700 a month so I don't have to pay National Insurance either 😇
Paid too much in my time 🤷‍♂️

My bad. A poor assumption by me as that’s the current system and I apologise.

Damn, you’ve outed me😮. You’ve got me sussed. Yes, I voted Tory almost exclusively since the 1979 election when Thatcher (almost said Maggie there 😮😁👍) got elected. However, I also voted Labour once - for Tony Blair (since outed as Bliar) as I was disillusioned with the sleaze rampant in the Tory party then (and again now it seems). Another time I voted Lib-Dem as they promised a 1p income tax increase for all and promised that money would go directly into schools & the NHS iirc. I think that was in Paddy Pantsdown’s day. Where we used to live, Richmond Upon Thames was always a close run thing between Lib-Dems & Tories, something to do with all the theatrical lovies that live there.

Agreed. The entire system needs to be massively simplified.

It’s not but I’m sure it’s not that black & white and his/her overal tax, unless they’re under declaring will be akin to those of someone on PAYE these days I would have thought.
Why do people begrudge paying tax, and moan about the state of roads / nhs / police etc etc ?
I don’t - see above - but as Barry said it doesn’t go there. Nowadays everything including NI goes into the same pot and a lot of that goes on servicing Govt debt.

What’s this thread about again 🤔 ? Just need Wayne to post a bike for sale now 🤣

Vehicle excise duty doesn't fix potholes, national insurance doesn't go to the nhs, stealth taxes everywhere you look - what's the point in pretending to have a low tax system when it's over 50% for most and everybody is scrabbling to avoid it?

The question of contractors paying less tax has been manufactured by government for years, strip out a contractors risk (no holiday pay, no sick pay, no insurance, no company expenses, redundancy or perks) and you quickly erode that top line rate. If a contractor is paying the equivalent of one of your months tax bill they are putting the majority of their income into a pension they can't touch and living on a pittance.

Don't listen to the government soundbites do your own resesrch snd if it is so much more lucrative maybe grow a pair and try it rather than throwing stones, you're being played

No intention to ‘throw stones’, not at individuals anyway. It’s the system I think is wrong.

I was a contractor for a few years before taking a PAYE job.

Small universal tax to cover defence, Police / fire and administration with a minimal health care contract (USA style).
Everything else covered with insurance / payment at point of delivery.
Those on benefits (Pension is not a benefit), should be housed in army style dormitories/toilets/showers with food provided at set times.....
No cash for fags, booze and kids..... you'd be amazed on how much we'd quickly save money as a country....
All those dinghies would be reversing across the channel, condoms would be worn and scroungers would find jobs then private/housing association accommodation.

I bet you'd still find something to moan about and blame on some group of people.😉😉😉
😁

Probably was, I wasn't aiming to upset anyone, just giving my views on tax.
Not upsetting me I just get tired of the government sponsored 'bash a contractor' rhetoric. Now they have effectively killed the contract market in the UK who will be bleating when all the decent sized projects go to India and other exploitative markets. The reality is that UK wages are being further squeezed by stealth as contractors are forced onto paye contracts without employee benefits, those still able to contract have had their rates squeezed by approx 30% when it's finally 'fair' we'll all be in a similar life style as the former Soviet union.

Be careful what you wish for springs to mind 🤔
