2 strokes.

just trying to figure the collective age for the humor in the last several posts
They are like a bunch of 16 year old boy queers finding their voice on the internet :)(y)

What would be proper tires, as it is set up as a dirt track racer and they are the appropriate tires for that style of racing.
I know. But I'd like a flat tracker for the road, which would mean 17" rims and sticky tyres. Not stricty authentic, just practical. Thus shod, it would be a riot as a road bike.
I knew someone who built a bike almost identical to that but with a tuned XS 650 engine on 17" wheels and slicks. It looked ace.

Here in Merica, I can have as many Barret 50 cal and M16 assult weapons as my over extended credit will allow but the 2 stroke is rare as hens teeth. I used to race motocross and always dreamed of the same power delivery and light weight of my RM250 on the street. I have ridden the Yamaha RD350 and it was lovely but I have always dreamed of having a GP replica 2 stroke like an NSR or TZ ect. I dont think I will be able to acheive my dream now but I can still drool over a beauty like that

makes perfect sense now that you have explained the way you would like to use it. I seriously considered the Indian XTR but a 500lb bike with 135hp is not the same even if it looks a lot like the bike in question. My 999 is a little lighter and about the same power which is a riot on the road but I doubt I would enjoy it as much off road.

That is a beautiful machine, will you be out on it this year Ron?
What’s it like to ride?

Back in the day, I had a 250lc and after that a 350 ypvs, and never had any trouble with them, so when Roadtrip wanted a 748 and to swap his bitsa (with a wad of cash from me), I went for it (it will be 10 years in September).

Classic insurance (fully comp) is £100 a year.

I needed a lighter bike, and Roadtrip seems to have done a nice job on what was a German import (matching numbers). He gave me lots of invoices relating to the parts/work involved, and although only the indicators are standard ( ;) ) it looks quite similar to a standard 350lc if you shut your eyes. Plus there is no longer any road tax or mot to think about.

Brakes are far better (3 discs), handling round corners is lovely, performance is pretty much the same, as it's a standard engine (not modified).

Back end is supported by a Hagon gas/adjustable shocker, and is a bit too high for me as I approach my 70th, so I might look at a Honda Cub at some stage.

My mate wants to come and try it out with a view to ensuring that it is running well, but as he has raced in the IOM, I'm not sure I should let him loose on it.....

I am having a little bit of trouble understanding the Bitsa term. Many seem to use it as a derogatory description but Rons bike has Ohlins suspension, better brakes and other parts that make the bike far superior to any standard bike. Does the term just mean modified or is there baggage included with the label? I have all the original parts to my 999 but have changed multiple parts to make it much better and faster on the track. What is allowed, eg: cam shaft swaps, Zorst, gearing? When does it offically change from a modified standard to bitsa?

Aye, you've just done a grand job of describing the term bitsa, your T9 atm is a bitsa, but as you have all the original parts available.
Ron's mars bar is a bitsa, it has been upgraded with more modern parts and beautifully too, a resto mod if you like.
Another bitsa would be say a standard 916 bip that has had parts added to make it look like say a SPS.

A "Bitsa" is probably not worth as much as a "standard" bike, but most LCs ended up tracked or in hedges, walls, canals and scrappers (with bent forks and frames), and as a result, original parts got sold out years ago.

Do you wait years to get an original tank, or buy one from India? Exhausts rotted years ago and you cannot get new oem, so do you buy Microns/Gibsons or patch up bent holed originals?

Here's me bending my old 250LC years ago at Three Sisters, near Wigan.

Bitsa is bits of this bits of that
Usually used when a bike is thrown together from a pile of bits from different bikes and is just shite
A kinder term for Ron’s bike would be modified (restomod ? ) but where’s the fun in that 😁

Ok, so Today I learned: Bitsa is a bike with (multiple?) non original parts applied even if its owner still retains the parts to return it to bog standard. This seems to only apply to major body, suspension and controls/gauges. is this correct? Both of my Ducs are currently bitsa but I have all the original parts to make them standard again. From what was said in the responses, this does not apply to motor builds like added cams and heads but what about adding slipper clutches and non original exhaust systems. Both my bikes have Termi's but would a Scorpion or any other non dealer supplied system make a difference. Here in the USA the price is not effected much with (louder) non standard exhaust and things like a slipper clutch would be sought after but not increase value the same with motor mods unless it is something like a superbike spec. I have the original 748 matching numbers motor sitting on the bench while the 916 motor is in the bike. I just want to make clear that I am only talking about lower models and not SP(S) or R type bikes

Really a bitsa is taking a collection of parts from multiple bikes of the same model
And trying to pass it off as an original bike, they are always a pile of crap
Often done with hi value bikes
This side of the pond adding term is or a slipper clutch doesn’t affect values especially if standard bits are included

My 996 has a load of mods but mainly bodywork and a full Termi 45mm-50mm exhaust with a stage1 Fast by Ferracci Eprom chip!! I do have everything to put it back to complete standard even the standard exhaust system. I wouldn't say it's a bitsa but i'm sure someone will argue the toss!! :ROFLMAO:
