What will the world be like once everyone is forced to run electric vehicles? I see a huge issue with trade in after the batteries have past their useable limit. $45,000 for a new purchase then drive for 100,000 miles and then after 8-10 years, huge bill to replace the batts in a 100,000 mile car that you cant sell or trade towards a new model? Electric cars have a use for people like my parent, retired and rarely leave town. People who live and work in the city could benefit but would need a second car if they want to do long distances. My job occasionally requires me to drive from near Boston to Maryland or south Jersey, I would have to spend additional hours a day stopping to recharge. Unless there are some technological breakthrus in battery tech or they manage to make some form of universally shared battery that can be swapped at a station, how can they possibly expect people to give up the freedom that the ICE allows to get a product that cost more and lasts less miles? We have seen the Mercedes that ran for 1,000,000 miles with regular maintainance but it did not require 6 or 7 full battery replacememts at $15-25,000 each time. I know of used car dealers now who will not take electric or hybrid cars due to the battery replacement issue as the cost is the same as or more expensive than the remaining value. My 2014 Subaru has over 200,000 miles now and had only ever needed 2 wheel bearings replaced in all that time anf still runs great. Even an engine replacement or rebuild would still cost less than battery replacement on an electric and even at 200,000+ miles I can trade it in for 3-4,000 off a new car. I only see electric cars good for company fleet vehicles and people who drive very little, as for me I doubt I will ever own one.
