Rail union threatens strike after e-bike explodes on platform

A rail union has threatened to strike if e-bikes are not banned from the London Underground after one caught fire on a station platform.

Aslef, the train drivers’ union, said an e-bike ā€œexploded and burst into flamesā€ two weeks ago as it was being wheeled towards the open doors of a train at Rayners Lane station.

Video footage of the February incident taken by a passenger shows flames licking around an e-bike next to a Metropolitan Line train.

What will the world be like once everyone is forced to run electric vehicles? I see a huge issue with trade in after the batteries have past their useable limit. $45,000 for a new purchase then drive for 100,000 miles and then after 8-10 years, huge bill to replace the batts in a 100,000 mile car that you cant sell or trade towards a new model? Electric cars have a use for people like my parent, retired and rarely leave town. People who live and work in the city could benefit but would need a second car if they want to do long distances. My job occasionally requires me to drive from near Boston to Maryland or south Jersey, I would have to spend additional hours a day stopping to recharge. Unless there are some technological breakthrus in battery tech or they manage to make some form of universally shared battery that can be swapped at a station, how can they possibly expect people to give up the freedom that the ICE allows to get a product that cost more and lasts less miles? We have seen the Mercedes that ran for 1,000,000 miles with regular maintainance but it did not require 6 or 7 full battery replacememts at $15-25,000 each time. I know of used car dealers now who will not take electric or hybrid cars due to the battery replacement issue as the cost is the same as or more expensive than the remaining value. My 2014 Subaru has over 200,000 miles now and had only ever needed 2 wheel bearings replaced in all that time anf still runs great. Even an engine replacement or rebuild would still cost less than battery replacement on an electric and even at 200,000+ miles I can trade it in for 3-4,000 off a new car. I only see electric cars good for company fleet vehicles and people who drive very little, as for me I doubt I will ever own one.

I’m sure it would. There are specialists who’s vans are kitted out just for pumping diesel out of your Multistrada on a Friday night šŸ‘€

There must be a need for people who get caught short between leccy points
You'd need a fairly big generator to give a decent boost to an electric plonker, err owner - and s multitude of different connectors to boot.

Feck em, let them freeze at the side of the road as a lesson 🤣🤣

A colleague has a poledancer and travels around 65 miles to come to work (each way) this morning his electric shit box was still plugged in but hadn't charged šŸ™„ he has to rush into the middle of the city (wrong way) to find an expensive fast charger before coming to work 🤣🤣 feck that

My Multistrada would not convert petrol to diesel. I know, I tried.
But there is a bloke on here whose bike does resemble a small refinery!

BP petrol station used to have green pump handles for diesel, and black for petrol - the opposite of every other station.

One friday evening about 3 days after getting my last Multi, I filled up with diesel - got about 300m up the road before it konked out in a cloud of smoke.

Called the guy with a van out - took him a couple of hours to get to me, and about an hour and a half getting everything he could out of the tank - he was very thorough I'll give him that. Eventually it kicked back into life and was absolutely fine after that, though I only had it for about 2-3000 miles.

The black Tranny I've been riding had 5l of diesel put in it, by the owner, by mistake and after topping off with petrol it ran fine if a bit smelly. Carbs tho…
