Fanny was a little bit horrible
Fanny Cradock was the first celebrity chef. Seen here with Mr Cradock, demonstrating how to crack an egg elegantly.
She once appeared on TV, stuffing a chicken, dressed in a Norman Hartnell ball gown, wearing diamonds. Hiding her working class background, Fanny spoke with a particularly posh accent. She was flamboyant, snobby and a bully.
Remembered for introducing the nation to such things as banana candles, flambéd veal brains and green-dyed potatoes. Her tips for cooking a goose included: “Think of someone you do not like, take a fork and stab it viciously all over.”
Hilariously, she shouted on screen to her drunken husband “Pass me the bloody bain marie, Johnnie!.”
Fanny described Les Dawson as “a lump of lard” and of Cilla Black, proclaimed “I hate her quack-quack singing.”
Her fame brought luxuries including a Rolls-Royce, a boat in Cannes and grand parties at her South London home, which she encouraged gossip columnists to describe as “Hollywood style”.
However, her lack of control was her downfall and she was axed after tearing into cookery competition winner, Gwen Troake on live TV. Furious viewers bombared the BBC with complaints.
She abandoned her two sons and was a serial bigamist. Her third marriage was annulled, as her second husband, a Catholic, refused to grant her a divorce. Despite his assertion, for technically a fourth marriage, she took on Johnnie Cradock’s name and they lived as husband and wife, despite not being able to marry.
Johnnie died of lung cancer at the age of 82 in 1987.
Described as heartless until the end, Fanny spent just five minutes with him in hospital and avoided the funeral. By then, the British public had long forgotten the couple.
Fanny died from a stroke, aged 85, in 1994 with very few mourners attending her funeral.
