What have you done on your bike today?

More made-up names!

Having found a bit of spare time this morning, my son and I had another look at the fail to start Multi.
The V plug cap came out to expose a clean hole and plug top. The plug came out easily and when tested had a spark.
Then having drains the coolant disconnected the rad hoses and hinged the rad forward ; we were able to then pull out the H. plug cap. Bingo! it was minging wet and covered in dirt and grit. We then spent quite some time scratching and blasting the water and crud out of the hole with the airline before attempting to remove the H. plug. We cannot get the plug spanner to grip the plug, it just jumps as though it were the wrong size.

It is lunch time so we've given up.

any ideas? @West Cork Paul et al (No not you Al)

Did you put the plug into the horizontal cyl?

It’s a 14mm thin wall socket you need (I’m sure you know that anyway). Maybe, just maybe, someone put the wrong plug in and it’s got a 12mm hex (eg LMDR9A).

Also, aren’t there 4 plugs on yours? It is a 1260 yes?

No, I've not done the plugs on this bike before they've been done by the dealership.

I bought a plug spanner for the job and it worked fine on the V. plug. I took a photo down the H. plug hole and if anything the hex appears to be bigger though it could be an illusion. I will try the plug spanner in my spare engine and measure how far it goes in and compare notes.

Yes there are four plugs but the other two are visible being as they are not set into a deep hole.

I don’t think you’d get bigger than a 14mm plug down the hole. If it was previously serviced by a dealer (this is Bumpkin’s write off isn’t it) then I’m sure it’s the correct plug.

Are you sure you’ve pushed it in far enough? (Said the actress to the Bishop😂).

Also, you shouldn’t need to have to move the rad to get at the horizontal central plug.

Remove the side plug on the H cyl to check for a spark. It will run with just one plug sparking but 2 give a better burn.

It’s on my bike.
The socket goes to the same depth on Bumpkin’s engine as it does on mine. So I can only assume that it is ceased in and has rounded the corners on the plug. Next attempt will be a 6 point plug, instead of the 12 point I have been using.
I probably don’t need to get the plug out but it has become personal now.

Here you go, get some of these babies they will have it out in a minute 🤣

My understanding is that the secondary plugs fire at a later interval at low revs and sync up at 4000rpm. This made total sense on my DVT when it ran like a haunted shithouse because of main sparkplug lead failure.

I have been doing a bit of work on my S4R. Put new rear hub bearings in and then stripped the exhaust system off to fix it and clean it. I had to unrivet the ends of the mufflers and sent one of them away to get some titanium welding done on it. Repacked them both and riveted back together. I ended up polishing the whole lot as cleaning just wasn’t doing the job. I also found that the H cylinder has had a warped exhaust manifold which has been blowing by a little bit, ringed in red. When I put a straight edge over it, it rocked up and down about half a mm and so I filed off a bit of meat in the area ringed in blue and then honed it for a while on an oilstone to make it all nice and clean. I am ready to put it all back on but Am going to burn some colour into the titanium muffler risers first with a blowtorch.

Not cheap to replace either !

Yeah, roughly 24-25€ each at retail.
It’s easy to see why so many people get conned into buying fake ones off eBay & Amazon where they cost 5-10€ each.

FYI, for you, the cheapest place to get them retail is motorcycle shop.ie who are selling them at €18.90 each with free delivery on orders of €70 or more. No taxes for you going from ROI to NI 👍

Fook me, I just checked Visorshop.co.uk (they’re in NI for those who don’t know) they’re asking €31.75 😮

Correct. There is a delay in their firing intervals, I just didn’t bother put down the whole explanation.
Nice work on the exhaust 👍

Like a numpty, I didn’t even check price and ordered them over the phone, followed by a deep gulp after being told the price!

Thing is, whilst in the conversation, I was too embarrassed to ask to cancel them and carried on with the purchase, acting all cool, like it seemed a grand price to me 😬😂

@West Cork Paul

How did you / what did you use to, remove the plug on the side the V. cylinder, the one hidden under the frame?
Get a 14mm ring spanner and grind it down so it’s about 1/2 its circumferences original thickness and it will fit in. Once you’ve loosened it it’s a long fiddly job with your fingers to turn it out. Or, try and push a piece of 8mm ID tubing/fuel hose etc over the top and then turn that.
