Medical Update

Just catching up on mail after a spell in hospital after crashing bike (CBR rather than my 748) early in June and was surprised to find that injuries are almost the same - I,ve had collapsed lung due to 6 busted ribs and also got fractured shoulder and broken and displaced collarbone. I,ve got appointment at Newcastle fracture clinic tomorrow to find out what they propose to do about it but am expecting surgery will be required so will follow your prgress with interest! I,ve also got insurance through Carole Nash but apparently my leathers etc are not covered so will have to take a look a my house contents policy!

Flippin eck mate we are like twins!!!! As you will have read I am well on the way to recovery with no surgery required on the shoulder, hope they have been looking after you in the toon, when I crashed near Alnwick I was airlifted to Wansbeck who then kicked me out two days later when it was obvious I could not look after myself (I live on my own), hence the girl friend taking me accross to hers in Carlisle for care!!Have to say Cumberland Infirmary have been spot on with their care and treatment!!
Get well soon mate:D

Bruce, My crash was near Stanhope so ended up in Dryburn for the best part of a week as they could not decide where to send me for ortho treatment - will know more tomorrow after I see Mr Williams at Newcastle General. Accident was a bit strange as well and have no recollection of exactly what happened but according to police and witnesses the bike just "went" after overtaking a car on a relatively straight stretch of road - no suggestion of excessive speed or reckless riding but ambulance guy thought the tar was soft and when I took a look at the damage today there appears to be melted tar on the tyres.

Not as "cheery" as planned

Well here we are back in Hetton, got back from Carlisle yesterday, felt good and Ann departed late afternoon back over west...slight hitch last night as I started to feel unwell, racing pulse, breathless, chest pain so rang NHS Direct who promptly sent an ambulance and whisked me back to wansbeck hospital with a suspected heart attack!!! Blue lights and everything ffs, anyway after much testing, x ray and poking and prodding they could find nowt wrong so let me out at lunchtime today!! Had no means of getting home (45 miles) so they gave me my own ambulance home!!! So thats where the NHS budget is going at present!! So I hope thats all the flippin' drama oot the way, that b@astard pheasant has a lot to answer for!!!

Bruce don't worry, these symptoms are often caused by the panic realisation that you are going to have to cook and wash for yourself instead of having a woman do it for you!
Pizza delivery and laundrette will alleviate the problem!

Seriously you are not having an easy time so try and take it slowly and don't rush the recovery.
You were looking not too bad at the weekend when I saw you so you are getting there.

Thanks Stewart, maybe you are right, could have been domestic fear!!! I am taking it slowly but going back to work (20hrs) tues next week, need to get on with life, getting the ER6 fired up on Sunday and going for a short (30/40 mile) ride to see how I get on!!!:D

Life just gets worse for you.

Firstly the accident with all the pain and health problems and to cap it all you end up on an ER6.
How much worse can it get?

:lol2:

Stewart, its a "free" ER6 just while M & S in the toon are sorting the monster!!! It is kindly loaned from the Carlisle garage that is Ann's, the alternative was her Yamaha 125 ffs!!!

Hope you're feeling better. What a shock, but must agree with Stewart, probably a fear of housework, cooking etc. ;):D

Take it easy.:D

Bruce, Good to see that you are on the mend. I eventually got my collarbone plated and screwed on the 18th and was allowed home the next day but started feeling poorly a few days later with high temperature and fever - ended up back in A&E and am now on antibiotics again. I have to keep arm in sling for another couple of weeks before I can even start physio but expect to get stitches taken out on Monday so am making progess. Looks like you will be back on 2 wheels long before me!

Well back at work on light duties and doing ok but so tired all the time and still sore!!! Going to see my GP this week to demand a referral to an orthopedic guy for the shoulder, problem is he will refer me back to Wansbeck where I was taken after the tumble, they were as much use as a sponge leg on a wet night!!! Can anyone advise can I demand to be referred to say Borders General or Newcastle General/RVI/Freeman???? Not up on medical etiquette!!
Advice please:)

Referrals out of your home area may not be available to your GP in the brave new NHS. That'd knock out Borders General (you are in England aren't you ?). Should be able to go to Newcastle I'd have thought.

Thanks, I thought that cross border referal may be out but if they could refer me to the toon that would be better, thanks for your input mate!
Cheers
Elephant Man!!

Bruce, I,m not sure how the referral system works but it is worth asking your GP for advice. I was lucky to get referred to Mr Williams at Newcastle General orthopaedic dept who plated and screwed my collarbone - after the accident my left shoulder looked about 3 inches lower than the other one and on the Xrays there was a gap of about half an inch where the bone was shattered. I,ve now got a 5 inch scar along my shoulder and have still got a fair bit of pain but at least I look (relatively) normal. I felt OK immediately after the op but then developed an infection in the punctured lung and had to go back on antibiotics - lots of suffering but I hope that I will benefit from the surgery in the longterm. I,m back to see the consultant today so I guess I will get to see the Xrays of the metalwork and will hopefully be allowed to take off the sling.

Hope you manage to get yours sorted as well.

Thanks mate, will see what they say, but I suspect that as the accident was 15th May they will do nowt!! Sounds like you are making good progress now, will keep you posted mate
Take it slowly

Me too! 6 bolts and a plate, rebuilt a couple of years ago. Got mine done on BUPA, it can be quite funny comparing the scars with the NHS versions most racers have - mines much neater!

Once the pain goes, the surface stays numb for a few months. The feeling does come back but it takes time. Doesn't really bother me now and has had not detrimental affects on strength etc.

I was 5 or 6 weeks after the accident before I got plated. ;)

Last time I was there it was for ward 34 where they give you "horse" tablets and tell you it will heal up in time!!!

Bruce, Hope you manage to get a referral - Newcastle General Hospital is a bit run down and the orthopaedic ward is shabby and understaffed but I was only in for one night and I was told that Mr Williams is the best for shoulder surgery - even my scar is neat.
I,ve posted before and after Xrays so you know what to expect!

Bruce, our shoulder guy in Inverness is great. Mr Baird. Have you looked into going private and claiming on the insurance?

Nice clean hospital here too! :)

Well it's time for an update...Those that were on the Galloway run will know I was riding Ann's ER6 and thrashing the balls off it...(had it 136mph on the speedo bouncing off the rev limiter!!) unless it was the wet making it cut out!!! So able to ride a bike (my monster is still in M and S in the toon getting sorted). Looking like the Masher will be on the Kwack as I am not sure the real bike is going to be sorted in time...Medically have appt with orthopedic guy at BGH (borders general) 1st Sept to see if they can pin or plate my shoulder so all well, still in massive pain but hey gets me off the cleaning hoovering!!!
Cheers the now...:D

Update time

Well it's sort of good news!! Saw Mr Glover the Orthopedic guy at Borders General yesterday and they are going to operate, the operation is called the Weaver Dunn technique and it involves sawing the end off my collar bone, drilling a hole in it and wiring it into place!! I feel pain coming on but it will be 100% after op!! Will be waiting 10 weeks or so, which means it will be winter by then so not loosing any "bike" time!! Happy Days:D

Well that's good news Bruce but it beats me why the didn't put it back in place to start with while it was newly broken. Was there a good reason or just incompetence?

Incompetence I think although my Scapula was bust in the accident so maybe they had to wait til it was mended!! Just wish they had kept me informed though!!!
