My empire of dirt...

So I finally have all the piles in what will be our bedroom replaced.. also replaced one bearer that was a bit split and ugly.. have decided in this room to also replace the joists. It will make life alot easier for putting the membrane down and space the joist correctly for the insulation
I've begun treating for bora, this is gunna cost way more than expected!!!! But it has to be done. For best results they recommend mixing treatment with turpentine so I'm doin that. Bit stinky but hopefully worth it.
Anyhu, coffee, then I'm onto it!!

Yesterday I got the last of the joists removed, borer treatment done and cleared the ground then I got sidetracked.
Went to the pub for one at lunchtime, bad idea. A mate I'd not seen for sometime happened to be there so no more work got done!!!
Anyhu, I'm gunna smash it today I hope. Gunna put moisture barrier down after I sculpt the dirt a bit to ensure water cant run onto the plastic and cause problems..
Hopefully it goes well can then put new joists in and start on insulation.
Goal is to have the floor completed by end of weekend so next week I can frame out the door opening and move the contents of the bedroom and spare room in there..
Should be achievable..
Some pics...
Look at the state of the old piles!!!

You are making me sweat, just by looking at that! Good work👏👏👏

How do you avoid building a cosy space for vermin? Are you putting bait boxes under the house chiz?
Hopefully it ain't a problem for clean people like us!!!
Have found one very old rats nest so far but no signs of rats or mice. If it did become a problem then yea, traps and bait.
There was rats at the end of the garden but since clearing all the rubbish they have moved on..
got a pwesky wabbit that's gunna cop some lead soon, Lil fuck keeps digging holes everywhere ..
Apparently the insulation I'm going to put in has no nutritional value to rats and mice but I know chickens love it, @Laava

Are some of the internal walls uninsulated planks?
Not a great deal of value insulating interior walls unless ya want different climates in different rooms I guess...
None of the exterior walls are insulated, that was made mandatory some time in the 70's I think..
I will be removing all plaster board and the timber boards beneath to treat any rot/borer, retrofit building paper, insulate and re-wire..
One day!!!!

Yesterday I got the joists in and most of the nogs before I ran out of timber..
So we headed to town for more and to swap the insulation over.
Also picked up more tape as the stuff I used hadn't stuck so good. Was a bit surprised but this as it was expensive 90mm stuff and everything was dry and very clean.
Anyhu, I got some more expensive heavy duty highstickyness duct tape! Now I'm in the process of going down both sides of the original tape. Bit of a faff but it's got to be right or it's largely a waste of time..
Then it's put the last few nogs in and start insulation...
Not sure if I will have floor down today now but will be very close..

Cooking on gas dude!! (y)

Insulation going in ..
It's a very snug fit.. the stuff I have is in 360 x 1200 sheets, the spaces between joists and nogs are 352 x 1150 so I have to cut sheets to length but they just squeeze in width wise as the have cuts sorta half way through on the edges to allow for a bit of compression.
I'm cutting em with a long craft knife blade rather than a saw in a bid to keep the mess down and its kinda working..
Just having a pancakes break!!!

Most benefit is sound proofing but you could always use sound deadening plasterboard but they are more expensive obviously.

Done a Lil bit of work for a chap in the uk who specializes in sound proofing systems..
Quite interesting and alot of fucking about!!!
Seems sound travels through solid objects so to make walls/ceilings sound proof they have to be made of several layers independent of each other rather than the likes of acoustic plasterboard layered up..
We did a job for Warner bros at their offices in Central London, making a small cinema room for the executives. This was truly sound proof! Cost was somewhere around 300k for a 6 x 8 mtr room .. think that included the furniture ect though but still quite something!!!!

Yeah. A "cinema room". Sure.

Floor nearly done... it will be done today!!!!
Had to go to town to get more screws, a length of timber, a sheet of ply for boarding up the old front door and some guttering ..
That wasted over 2 hours of my day but I'm cracking on now..
3/4 of floor done, just about to cut the last few nogs and can then finish as much as possible.
One half sheet of ply can only be temporary fixed as once I get into the next room I will need access as there is a section of bearer that runs into both rooms that needs replacing. All good as it is in the entrance so won't stop us moving camp..
We are off to auckland for the long weekend as of this Wednesday so progress will halt yet again..
Hopefully we can move rooms before we go so as to crack into the next room straight off the bat.....
Just looking back through this thread and we moved in 4 months ago this Friday! Thought it was more than that..
With that in mind I don't think we are doing too badly...
16k kiwi deep on materials thus far ( bout 8 gbp) so again, not too bad..
That said, there is very little money left...
Anyhu....

You're winning, imagine what it would have cost if you had had a chippy in to do the work
This is true 👍 those fucken chippies are over paid!!!! Underpaid.. I'm not sure.. but you are correct, I'm fortunate enough to have the skills and tools to make shit happen.
If it weren't for this I would never have taken this project on... that said, although ivcan save money on the labor side, I can't odds the materials or time spent... its all good though....
