The Hardly Dangerous takes on the GT1000

but what future is there with (imho) the bland bean counter bikes that seem to be emanating from the factory.

what a load of b@@llocks! (imho)

How many owners end up with more than 1 Duke because they don't/can't sell the existing one?

big difference between don't and can't!

has a fantastic body, ugly face but is so comfortable to ride and it can be ridden fast

mmm...sounds familiar!

Anyway......

IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT DUCATI ARE DOING, GO BUY ANOTHER BIKE, JOIN ANOTHER FORUM, AND GIVE US ALL PEACE!!!:D
my 2p worth, for what it's worth....

Mary, DKM (sorry don't know your name), Robert and Martin have some very valid points. DKM, I too came into the Ducati scene at the 999 era and never look back. I also bought a 1098R having NEVER sat on one, let alone ride one... when you know it's right......:D I am surprised at the Ducati Bashing going on... Doubters should read this months Superbike, the BMW HP2 Sport, KTM RC8, Aprilia thing and 1098 are head to head. The BMW comes an absolute last (as expected), and guess what wins by a Country Mile.... the 1098 :D . Because it's ONE of the right bikes Ducati have out there at the moment. Since May I've bought a Hyper, 1098R, and D16RR, so I'm maybe not the guy to be negative about the brand... I love it. Mary was bang on, the best thing to happen to Ducati in Scotland was DG, here's a challenge, tell me a dealership that is better ????? One other post stated why so many people have two + Ducatis becuase they can't sell them... sorry, disagree ... if anyone has a Ducati becuase they CANNOT SELL it, and that's the ONLY reason they kept it... can they add to this thread please.

Anyway - ED, wrong arm mate :D :D :D :D Typing this with one finger, and I have to say, having read a lot of these posts, I'm typing with the MIDDLE FINGER    That'll do me on this topic ;)

Interesting that Stuart, as the only superbike I'd seriously consider to replace the 999 at the moment is an HP 2 Sport , I'll not go too deeply into the reasons why :) suffice to say I know its my criteria that are so different to what the magazine reviewers can put "points" to which i think is how this thread started originally :)

So, back on topic are magazine reviews important (to owners not sales!!)? did it influence your decision to buy a Ducati and and do Ducati owners really want to see reviews which re-affirm their purchase or are they happy just knowing most testers don't get it and will judge purely on HP/weight and lap times? Which magazines do you think give good opinions ?

Sorry questions are based on some research i did when we shifted direction a couple of years ago and took a decision to reduce our racing involvement and use the budget more effectively.

So, I'll start it off yes, reviews are important if its well written and researched by a journo who's opinion I value ( EG Alan Cathcart), no its never solely influenced my decision to buy any bike be it Ducati or otherwise and I couldn't care less what the lap times, HP are but am interested in how manufacturers reduce weight and the technology used.
I tend to see Bike and MSL as being fair and relatively unbiased.

Mike, I have to be honest, I tend NOT to take notice of bike reviews unless they point out something horrific. If I tested the RC8, HP2, 1098, and Aprilia, then I would be guided somewhat to the 1098 before the test even started, I'll bet you would be guided towards the HP2. Like EVERYTHING in life people have differing views - thank god, or we'd all be driving CX500's and Ford Sierra's  Did you not post earlier than the BMW was the only bike you had reliability issues with ?? Yet want to trade out your beautiful 999 for an HP2 sport... in my eyes, no contest, sorry. If I've got that wrong I apologise... there's been a few threads/posts to read through this week :D :D :D Arm permitting maybe see you on Sunday, I'll stand you a pint (milk or coke !!) and we'll talk about it :D :D

Very quickly - MCN this week - did you see the picture of the Yamaha XJ650 Turbo... mate had one when I had my GPz750 Turbo... now those were the days !!!! Bikes were bikes and men were men :D :D :D

I like to read reviews but tend to take everything with a pinch of salt.
I would buy something if I liked it, even if every report absolutely slated it, because at the end of the day it is my opinion that matters the most...to me!
I work in the hifi industry and I know from experience there are plenty of products that don't win awards or get 5 star reviews that are in my opinion better than the products that do win the awards etc. I also know that there are plenty people who will not even consider buying something if it hasn't won an award/5 star review and I don't suppose bikes would be any different.
I know that there will be plenty of "bikers" who will base their decision on lap times and reviews etc without ever test driving the bikes, and some of them will buy Ducatis.
I bought my 996 without trying it. I had read about it, seen lots of pictures etc etc so knew what to expect and I wasn't disappointed. I like the styling etc and as far as I am concerned it is the most fun to drive, best to look at etc....But is a not just about the bike.... for me owning a Ducati has become a way of life! I have never before visited any bike dealer on a regular weekly basis for a coffee and a chat (I didn't buy the bike there but am treated no differently) I have never before joined any clubs and participated in ride-outs etc.
I still see bikes from other manufacturers that I admire so I am not totally blinkered towards Ducati....well maybe I am...My wife thinks I am obsessed....or did she say possessed!

:sorry: to be pernickty but I drive cars and I ride a Ducati. I was told off as a youngster when I referred to driving bikes:rolleyes:

I had a passion for Laverda but when I was after another bike in 1998 there were only the triples which were getting to heavy for me and the twins which didn't appeal to me so I looked to Ducati. I was all geared up to by a Superlight when I found out there was a new model due out and I bought a 900ss in the new style. I had read reviews of it and although there was some negative stuff, I still wanted one. I found one less than a year old in Bedford, the sellers name was Al Capone (I kid you not!) and he had a computer company called Chicago!
I handed the money over and rode it home and the more I rode it the more I loved it. I have found that test riding a bike does not give me long enough to get used to it. I had that a couple of years when I bought the 748, same thing handed the cash over rode it home, and same thing the more I rode it the more I loved riding it. I would have still had it as well and was not planning on exchanging it for anything as this was the bike I had always wanted. I read reviews of them but nothing I read would have influenced me one way or the other.
with Hi-Fi equipment you are supposed to 'road test' them first but I decided on reading reviews what I wanted and bought in online. So far I am really happy with it all and it sounds superb.....to me!
