My Energy supplier has gone bust.

Well, I was paying £105 with Green, my new payment is £111 after submitting my meter readings. 🤷‍♂️

I'm fully expecting a big hike and will search around in the next week or so.

They are no deals under the cap price.
Most aren't taking new clients.
Your current supplier cannot charge you more than the energy cap rate.

 
I used to work with a guy who knew somebody who was ex-Electricity board who would 'live stab' your supply upstream of the meter (outside the property) and run a feed to an electric boiler in an outbuilding. He reckoned the electric co's would never be able to trace it if you are rural and the only way you'd get rumbled would be if the heating oil co grassed you up for not buying any oil :ROFLMAO: if I wasn't in the habit of moving house regularly I may have enquired further :unsure:

Yip that exactly how it happens, the guy I heard of makes a nice living from it, a lot of Welsh farmers used his services in the past, why pay top rates dipping into your farm subsidies if you can have it free throwing a bit of cash at it eh? Also their safe way of disposing asbestos is free, dig a hole , get it buried and forget about it……
 
There is plenty you can do to legitimately reduce your energy costs.
This year we've replaced over 40 florescent tubes to LED and have around 15 more to go.
About the same number of dichroic 50W lamps are now 8W LED down lighters.
Even our external courtesy and security lamps are now all LED.
We've kept 3 SON night sun lamps, 400W each, but these are only use if I'm working in the courtyard or garden at night.

For clothes drying we use a gas tumble dryer, much cheaper than electric.

We've a hybrid air to water heating mixed with mains gas.
Ventilation is by a VAM unit that recovers the heat from exhaust a to heat fresh air.

I now turn off all the office computers when I leave. I used to leave them on 24/7.

Jobs on my to do list include better control of the circulating hot water and reprogramming the security gates and freezers to use less energy.

I went the led route with the outside light
used to replace the halogen bulb about every 18months a couple of quid a go
so a wonderful money saving led fitting installed about 40 quid
16 months later no light yippee another 40 quid light fitting
save money save the planet, load of bollocks

Many years ago I had a LED light manufacturing business. CEETEK if you want to look it up.
Our cheapest 1W lamp sold for nearly £80+VAT trade. Most expensive was a 300W underwater colour change at £30K
Back in 2006 I saw the writing on the wall and went to China to try to get some exclusive import contracts, but our competitor had beat me to it, by about 2 weeks.
He had signed deals with the best of them, what was left was real cheap shite.
Our production ended circa 2007.

The biggest issue with LED lighting is limiting current and controlling heat.
Of the low cost shite I see coming over the biggest issue is heat. We used to keep our COB's and LEDs to 70°C or 100°C at most.
Many of these I check now are running at 135-170°C.... nearly melting the solder that holds them to the board.
Try to choose LED lamps of a metal construction, with a heatsink design.
Choose lower wattages, so 10W rather than 30W in the same housing..... its just the physics of removing the heat.

I did think I had bought a reliable brand (energizer same as the battery)
light is rarely on more than a few mins at a time and it’s outside so heat shouldn’t be a problem
but having to replace a whole fitting, (metal with a heatsink on the rear) in about the same time span as a bulb
saves nothing in the long run

I had the same, replaced a LED flood with halogen as the wind buggered the LED, the halogen survives and the lamp can be changed for pennies. Another LED is still fine on the other side of the house as it is sheltered from the wind (my diagnosis). I'm sure I could get a decent LED but no real incentive
