A penal treadmill in Pentonville Prison, London in 1895.
In 19th century English prisons, the treadmill was a common form of penal labor. It was a large rotating wheel that prisoners had to step on continuously, much like walking up an endless staircase. Its official purpose was to instill discipline and occupy inmates, though it produced little of practical value beyond breaking spirits and enforcing obedience.
The device’s resistance could be adjusted to make the work harder or easier. This was done by tightening or loosening a regulating mechanism—literally, by turning a screw. Wardens who managed this task and oversaw the prisoners’ effort became informally known as “screws.”

Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Paul Cook perform together for the first time at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. The Sex Pistols' brief set includes only a few covers before the headlining band pulls the plug, but it marks the start of the UK punk movement.
Can't believe its been 50 years, although at thirteen, I still haven't heard of them, it would be later in 76 when I first introduced to the Pistols properly through a mate, I had no idea how much of an influence they would have on me.
