Diet

Depends what you’re prepared to eat surely, see things like chuck in the oven pizzas, ready meals etc for £1-£2.

I’m convinced supermarkets were behind ‘five a day’ fruit and veg (I know they’re not your thing) used to be cheap, once they’d come up with that shit they put a big green tick with ‘one of your five a day’ label on and went X10 on the price.
Wankers.

I don’t consider those food.

Food is nutrition - there’s very little in those. Eat it and feel hungry again in 3 hours.

Instead you can get a kilo of chicken thighs for £3 that would be two meals and far more nutritional benefit.

In the west we now treat food as entertainment.
Nutritionists and doctors say we need ‘a balanced diet’ intimating that we should eat a mix of foods. What other animal does that? None. Bears will eat berries when meat or fish isn’t available…that’s about it.
The notion of needing multiple food groups is a made up construct. You’re right about the 5-a-day…it started off as 7 but they thought that’s too many for people to consider manageable.

We need nutrition - meat is the only food group that provides every nutrient humans need. And it comes with the correct elements for us to absorb the nutrients, unlike those from vegs.

I try make use of as much wild food as possible, especially in the spring. I pick loads of wild garlic. The manager of our pub has multiple food allergies caused by medication for an illness she had. She loves garlic but can't eat cultivated varieties. But for some reason wild garlic is fine. I pick two stuffed carrier bags every spring for her and one for me. Some gets eaten straight away but most goes into making garlic butter and pesto. Keeps in the freezer till next year.

It surprises me how many people don't know about common wild plants you can eat, like dandelions, plantain, nettles, hawthorn leaves and flowers, chickweed, ground elder, meadowsweet, yarrow etc.
I was speaking to the barmaid in the pub a while back. She's in her late 60's and didn't know that dandelion leaves were edible.
In Mediterranean and eastern European countries they forage for wild greens all the time. We used to here. It's sad we're losing that knowledge.

It’s only taken 2 generations to lose that knowledge.

I've gone right off chicken in the last couple of years or so. It either looks and tastes disgusting - or it's breast fillets, which barely looks or tastes of anything.

Might just be me though.

Legs are the best part IMO but a proper whole free range chicken is great and does several meals including soup from the carcase.
I pour boiling water over the whole chicken then rub a little sea salt into the skin before cooking. Usually tastes delicious but definitely avoid most supermarket chicken which tends to be tasteless slop . Waitrose have some good ones though compared to the rest.

Yeah. I just seem to remember it was much cheaper to buy fresh food over ready meals etc years ago.

Chicken thighs are the tastiest chicken and very versatile. Having said that I'm cooking a full chicken tonight in the outdoor oven as I want to try the smoker function.

I used to prefer chicken thighs.
I've bought them from a local farm shop for a couple of years but I just don't enjoy them any more. Nor legs, nor quarters. I suppose I could just buy breast fillets but that's an expensive way to just be eating chicken.

The darker the chicken meat the tastier that's why I tend to avoid the breast ..its snow white with little flavour

I never buy chicken breast - if I was making a sauce for it, I would, but I tend to just use butter or cooking juices now.
The thighs skin crisps up with plenty of proper salt.
I only get them occasionally as a change.

How about game birds like pheasant or even wood pigeon? Both much stronger flavour than chicken.

I can only eat the white meat from chicken. The darker meat all seems really wet and slimey to me, plus I hate the smell and taste of birds that are more “gamey !” 😜😂

Nothing like either of those, try a wood pigeon from a butcher if you can find one, less gamey than pheasant and a bit meatier.
I'm amazed how little rabbit we eat here, i have had that abroad quite often and always enjoyed it.
Rabbit is not very nutritious.

I gather that if you only ate rabbit and nothing else, you'd soon starve to death.

I don't rate it, myself.

My smoked chicken from earlier. It took 45 minutes and was really succulent.

A quick look online says it's very nutritious and i can't see why that wouldn't be the case. Its a lean meat with plenty of muscle.

It’s the lack of fat that’s the problem - you need some fat with it to take on the nutrients.
No problem - cook it in lard or butter
